IHC calls for 2008
"Outstanding Teacher" nominations


The Idaho Humanities Council will be receiving nominations for its 2008 "Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Awards." The Council will honor one elementary and one secondary teacher of the humanities. Two awards of $2,000 each will be selected in December of 2008. Each teacher will receive $1,000 for themselves and $1,000 for their school to enhance the teaching of the humanities. Awards will be presented in February 2009.

ELIGIBILITY
Any student, parent, fellow teacher, school administrator, or member of the public may nominate one full-time teacher of the humanities in an Idaho public or private school. Self-nominations are not encouraged. Awards will be made only for the teaching of existing, no proposed, humanities course in literature, foreign languages, government, history, philosophy, comparative religion, anthropology, and art or music history are also eligible for nomination. Instructors of the performing and visual arts are not eligible for this program, unless such subjects are components of an interdisciplinary humanities course or program.

NOMINATION PROCEDURES

  • Nominations must be typed and must include the information on the following page.
  • Please do not exceed two typed pages. You may include resumes and other support materials.
  • Nominations must include the original and five copies. Faxed submissions will not be accepted.
  • Only one nomination per nominator. Multiple nominations for the same individual will not affect final selection.
  • Deadline: Nominations must be postmarked by December 1, 2008.

SELECTION
Members of the IHC board will select the award recipients. Selections will be based on merit for outstanding contributions to the teaching of the humanities, with primary emphasis placed upon classroom activities. Examples include: distinguished teaching; curriculum revision; innovative teaching methods; successful introductions of a new course; development of extracurricular programs in the humanities; and workshops/training of fellow teachers.

Narrative Information
The teacher will be evaluated on the following information. Please be sure to support general statements with specific details. Limit total response to no more than two typed pages.

  • Briefly describe the nominee's school and teaching environment (urban/rural; public/private; socio-economic and ethnic composition, etc.).
  • Briefly describe the specific contribution(s) that the nominee has made to the teaching of the humanities. The primary emphasis should be on classroom activities.
  • Briefly describe the nominee's impact on his or her students.
